Cyber criminals and those involved in the spread of fake news are facing increased scrutiny as the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has established special units to curb fake news and what the agency describes as anti-state propaganda.
Cyber Criminals on Alert: NCCIA Activates Special Units Across Pakistan
The NCCIA has also made cyber patrolling units functional in all regions to strengthen monitoring of cyberspace and improve the agency’s response to cybercrime and online activity.
NCCIA Establishes Special Units Against Fake News
According to an NCCIA spokesman, special units have been established to prevent the spread of fake news and anti-state propaganda.
The agency said it has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards fake news and anti-state propaganda, with officials directed to maintain merit and transparency while dealing with related complaints and investigations.
The newly established units are expected to strengthen the NCCIA’s ability to monitor online activity and respond to complaints involving potentially unlawful digital content.
Cyber Patrolling Units Made Functional
The NCCIA said cyber patrolling units have now been made functional in all regions for monitoring cyberspace.
The move is aimed at strengthening digital monitoring and improving the agency’s ability to identify and investigate cyber-related activity.
For people using social media and other online platforms, the development is also a reminder to verify information before sharing content that could potentially violate the law.
NCCIA DG Reviews Operations Across Punjab
The latest measures were reviewed during a five-day tour of Punjab by NCCIA Director General Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi.
During the tour, the DG inspected reporting centres, police stations and offices and held direct meetings with more than 500 complainants.
He reviewed the overall performance of NCCIA circles, pending complaints and cases, investigation branches, complaint cells, FIR branches and record-maintenance systems.
Focus on Faster Justice For Cybercrime Victims
The NCCIA DG directed officers to make the complaint and verification system more people-friendly and to use available resources to provide prompt justice to victims of cybercrime.
Officials were also instructed to improve the disposal of complaints and cases and strengthen record maintenance.
The agency said timely justice, transparency and merit-based investigation remain key priorities in handling cybercrime complaints.
Strong Warning For Online Offenders
The activation of cyber patrolling units and establishment of special units sends a clear message that online activity involving suspected cybercrime, fake news or other unlawful content can come under investigation.
However, individual cases will be assessed on the basis of evidence and applicable laws, and allegations remain subject to investigation and due legal process.
The NCCIA has reiterated that there will be no compromise on merit and transparency in investigations.
What Should People Do Before Sharing Content?
People should verify information before sharing it online, particularly when the content makes serious or unverified claims.
If someone encounters suspected cybercrime or unlawful online activity, they should preserve relevant evidence and use the appropriate official reporting channels rather than spreading the material further.
The NCCIA’s latest initiative is intended to strengthen cyber monitoring across Pakistan while improving the handling of complaints and investigations.
With special units established and cyber patrolling made functional across regions, the agency is increasing its focus on the rapidly expanding digital space and the challenges associated with online crime and misleading content.
